The Greenough Barn, Carlisle MA 01741
IN 2010 MASSACHUSETTS DETERMINED THAT THE GREENOUGH FARM PROPERTY WAS INDIVIDUALLY ELIGIBLE FOR LISTING ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES.
The Greenough Barn, in Carlisle MA , built in 1928, consists of a two and a half story traditional 8”x 8” timber frame with horse stables and a cow barn flanking it to the north and a garage and farm equipment shed to the south in a U-shaped plan.
It was designed by architect Joseph Leland to create an idyllic pastoral scene across the newly created Greenough Pond from the main house. The building materials and construction were superior to those normally found in farm buildings, which is why the barn has not deteriorated that much even though it is abandoned. Inside the building, the stable partitions consisting of hand turned columns with capitals and custom curved hinges, the animal feed bins, and the manure track remain as if the farmer had just left for the day.
